About Us
Welcome to this thing of ours!
My name is Curtis Jasa and I am an Ex Navy EOD Diver from the Desert Storm Days. I joined the Navy in November of 1986. I was doing the navy swim test in boot camp when I met what I thought was a navy lifeguard. In reality he was a SEAL. I soon found myself doing push ups and flutter kicks underneath the shower sprinkler. It took me two attempts, but i finally finished dive school in Panama City, Florida, in 1990. I was stationed at Mobile Unit 9 in Mare Island, California from 1990-92. After my uneventful participation in Desert Storm I received an honorable discharge in 1992. Although my time in the navy diving community was only a couple years I can testify this institution has been largely responsible for my success in life. I was privileged to have some heroic characters teach me, train me and instill confidence in me like no other time in my life. The Navy Diver Olympics is many things, but above and beyond all it is a way to say thank you to those who have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our nation and carry out the many missions above and below the surface.
About 6 months ago my buddy, Nick Summy, asked me who held the record for military push ups and pull ups. I didn’t know and our internet search began. Although there are several different types of records out there most were as verifiable as Elvis’s karate black belt in the 1970’s. My friend Flea, my old dive school roommate and the fastest guy I ever knew, said he saw a SEAL in Iraq do 100 pull ups for $100. I couldn’t believe it! I believe my life time best was 17 or 18 pull ups, and I thought I was cool. We have all seen the movie “Men of Honor” with the tribute to Carl Brashear. There is a scene where Master Chief Billy Sunday, played by DeNiro, and Brashear, played by Cuba Gooding Jr. compete for the breath hold contest. My girlfriend asked me if they really do that. I said, “No, but it would be cool.” The wheels started turning in my mind on the possibilities.
What a unique way to say thank you, exhibit the unique skills of our sailors and soldiers and have a great time simultaneously. The event has been choreographed well. We have derived a quick, simple and challenging way to measure who really are the best. We hope to make this event meaningful, entertaining and worthy of an annual event.
We thank the entire staff at Danny’s in Coronado for hosting this event along with our sponsors Luminox and ESS Eyewear. We appreciate all they have done to make this a fantastic event!
