Medical Consequences of Diving - VA letter to Clinics
There is one thing a navy diver very rarely thinks about during training and while in service, becoming disabled. Think of what the NFL studies regarding brain trauma have revealed. There has now been a sea change in youth football rules regarding concussions. Now mandatory medical evaluations have replaced the “tough it out and get back in there, Johnny” mentality. Anyone who was a navy diver, EOD or SEAL should review these documents if you feel you might be symptomatic because of your exposure to the elements of your work. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, ear problems, emotional/behavioral problems, pulmonary issues, sleep disorders, bone disorders and other maladies are much more common than you think.
Unfortunately, the Veterans Administration has some well documented history regarding the processing of claims. There have been improvements under the Obama administration but it is also fair to say we don’t have special forces mentality at the VA. These are also the exact folks who do the evaluating and compensating our wounded veterans. These documents were given to us by another brother out there fighting for recognition and compensation.
If you have any questions about this document, please contact Robert Kelly Jr. He is a retired Navy Diver and is an expert on the whole process.
